USM, PENANG, 3 October 2017 - Saadiah Ibrahim, a PhD student under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ng Wing Keong from the Fish Nutrition Laboratory, School of Biological Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has won the Student Best Poster Award at the recently concluded Asia-Pacific Aquaculture (APA 2017) conference, held in Kuala Lumpur on July 24-27.
According to Wing Keong, the conference was organised by the World Aquaculture Society and the student’s outstanding poster submission was entitled “Effects of Different Forms of Feeds on Fecundity of Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii” and for which she received a cash award of USD 400.
“Her PhD research focuses on exploring novel nutritional strategies to enhance the reproductive performance of “udang galah”, the Malaysian giant freshwater prawns.
“With dwindling local production of this freshwater prawn, it is hoped that her research will stimulate the hatchery production of quality post-larvae,” he said.
The APA 2017 conference was attended by 2,834 participants from 46 countries, with entries of 325 oral and 119 poster presentations.
An aquaculture trade exhibition featuring booths from many international companies was also held concurrently at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur. The next Asia-Pacific Aquaculture conference, APA 2018, will be held in Taiwan.
