USM-TORAY REACHES UNDERSTANDING TO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION
USM, PENANG, 21 September 2016 - The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Professor Dato' Dr. Omar Osman today held discussions with the Managing Director of Toray Industries (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., Masahiko Kawamura and Group HR, Legal & Compliance Head, Toray Group (Malaysia) of Companies, Gor Siew Yeng.
Both USM and Toray have agreed to strengthen cooperations in academics, research and a few other areas of strength for both parties and which would be advantageous in the future.
This include the possibility of having cooperations in designing and developing canoes and dragon boats from advanced carbon fibre materials, developing advanced sports attire from fabric materials produced by Toray to enhance the performance of USM and the nation's athletes in various sporting events and also collaborations in other areas.
"More importantly, this cooperation would allow both sides to leverage on the strength of each other in the knowledge and expertise, as well as the industrial resources that would be available in the long run," said Omar.
Also present were the USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dato' Dr. Muhamad Jantan; USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Professor Dato' Dr. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal; USM Director of International Collaborations, Professor Dr. Lee Keat Teong; Deputy Dean of USM School of Chemical Engineering, Associate Professor Dr. Mohamad Zailani Abu Bakar; and university principal officers.
