USM-UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW VENTURING INTO ACADEMIC COOPERATION
USM, PENANG, 15 September 2016 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and University of Glasgow (UoG) Scotland today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on having academic cooperation within the next three years.
The USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman said that, USM truly welcomed the cooperation with UoG, considering its long-standing history and reputation.
“The signing of the MoU in the field of academics would facilitate the mobility of staff and students between the two universities,” said Omar.
“There are some commonalities between USM and UoG. Both have had joint-publications of 22 papers for the past five years, and with more to look forward to from this cooperation.
USM also has some significance to UoG in certain aspects of interdisciplinary studies, in areas such as education for sustainable development,” said the Vice-Principal and International Dean of UoG, Professor Frank Coton.
He continued in saying that UoG is very selective in partnering with other universities to work together, and USM has been selected by UoG as the first Malaysian university to establish cooperation in the academic field.
Meanwhile, the Dean, USM School of Management, Professor Fauziah Md Taib when interviewed regarding the cooperation said that, “There are many possibilities in planning for academic programmes to be established between USM and UoG.”
As an alumna of UoG, she said that it would be a good move by USM in further rebranding itself and leveraging on the reputation and experiences of UoG. She also envisages the cooperation between the USM School of Management and USM Graduate School of Business (GSB) with the UoG Adam Smith Business School.
Also present at the ceremony were the USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Professor Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal; the Adam Smith Business School Reader in Economics, Dr. Serafeim Tsoukas; Director of USM International Mobility and Career Centre (IMCC), Dr. Muhizam Mustafa; lecturers from USM-GSB, Dr. Zurina Mohaidin and Junaimah Jauhar and key university officials.
