PENANG, 22 July 2016 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) will host a public talk by the Nobel Prize Winner in Physics 2014, Professor Dr. Shuji Nakamura at the Dewan Pembangunan Siswa 1, Kompleks Cahaya Siswa on Friday, 29 July 2016 at 10.00 a.m.

Organised by the USM Division of Academic and International Affairs (BHEAA), this Nobel Laureate Lecture Series will feature Prof. Nakamura sharing on the invention and development of blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in his talk entitled ‘Future Energy Efficient Lighting and Displays’.

Nakamura was awarded the prestigious 2014 Nobel Laureate in Physics award for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources.

The development of blue LEDs was the prerequisite for the production of white light using the combination of red, green and blue LEDs.

Today, we can hardly imagine living without these efficient, energy-saving white light sources that enlighten not only our homes but also smartphone displays and lots of other technical devices.

Nakamura obtained his B.E., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tokushima, Japan in 1977, 1979, and 1994, respectively.

In 1989, he started the research of blue LEDs and since then had received numerous awards and accolades for his work, discovery and invention.

Since 2000, he has been a professor of Materials and Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He is also the Research Director of Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center at UCSB.

Nakamura holds more than 200 US patents and over 300 Japanese patents, and has published over 550 papers in his field.

Over 300 students, researchers, scientists, engineers and physicists from the public and private sector are expected to turn up for the talk.

On behalf of BHEAA, Institute of Nano Optoelectronics Research and Technology (INOR) as secretariat for this programme would like to invite all USM staff and students to attend the talk.
