LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY, UK AFFIRMS RESEARCH COLLABORATION WITH USM
USM, PENANG, 16 April 2016 – Loughborough University, United Kingdom has shown an interest in establishing research collaboration focusing in the field of engineering with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
The USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman said that, both parties have held discussions on ideas for collaboration, which would be followed up at the next level with the involvement of the concerned parties.
“The collaborations would relate more specifically towards the USM academic schools and the university top management would give their fullest commitment to ensure the success of the collaborations.”
“This would include the aspects of joint-research development, exchange programme for the academic staff and students, development of academic programmes and many other areas which could bring benefits to both sides,’’ he added.
He stated that while chairing the presentation and discussion session relating to collaboration during a special visit by the delegation of Loughborough University (LU), headed by its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison here recently.
The discussion session saw the presentation of various ideas on enhancing international networking, with the attendance of the USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Professor Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal; USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dato' Dr. Muhamad Jantan; Director of USM International Mobility and Career Centre (IMCC), Dr. Muhizam Mustafa as well as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of LU, Professor Steve Rothberg and Director of LU International Office, Charles Carter.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of LU, Professor Robert Allison said that the outcome of the presentation highlighted the similarities which are present between these two universities.
“I see the many similarities that could be explored for mutual benefit, especially in research on engineering and outcomes that could benefit both countries,” he added further.
He explained that LU has the strength in areas such as engineering and sports science among many others, which could be further enhanced through collaborations with USM.
“I am confident that this would be a good beginning in deciding on the research strategy that would give an impact to the community and the public," he said.
