P1011462

USM, PENANG, 8 March 2016 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Bose Systems Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. for the continuation of the short-term training for undergraduate students in Bose Lean Enterprise, similar to the training courses previously conducted.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman represented the university in signing the MoA while Bose Systems Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. was represented by its Managing Director, Ruben Nyul.

Since BOSE Corporation was founded in 1964 by then Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Professor Dr. Amar G. Bose, the original philosophies and founding principles have not changed. Among the key principle for BOSE was to maintain an exceptionally strong commitment to research.

“I hope in this MoA extension for another three years between USM via the School of Mechanical Engineering and BOSE would further strengthen the cooperation between the two parties as university-industry collaboration partners," said Omar.

According to Ruben, BOSE would like to provide the exposure to selected students to the functional implementation of Lean Six Sigma, which would offer them knowledge at a faster pace and would save time in increasing the productivity in the industrial and manufacturing sector.

Lean Six Sigma is a philosophy in the industry which consists of three main levels, namely Yellow Belt, Green Belt and Black Belt, the latter being the highest.

“Our aim is to enable the students to apply the knowledge in the industrial sector using the Lean Six Sigma on a consistent basis," explained Ruben.

He added that obtaining knowledge in lean manufacturing at undergraduate level with actual industrial training enhances student employability.

The training would be conducted for three groups of 18-24 selected undergraduate students at the USM Engineering Campus. In addition, BOSE would also send the only PhD candidate from the USM Engineering Campus trained in the Lean System to undergo Black Belt training in China for two weeks.

Also present were the Dean, School of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Dr. Zainal Alimuddin Zainal Alaudin; Human Resource Director, Bose Systems Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Kamaldin Nordin and Business Unit Coordinator, School of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Khairuddin Mohamed.
