PUTRAJAYA, December 2015 - The Historic City of Melaka has become the first state in the country to be selected for a programme on efficient energy use, hence becoming a role model to others in forming collaborations on energy-saving efforts that will bring about a change in lifestyle.

Beginning from September 2014, 30 selected secondary schools in the state had undergone a phase in a lifestyle change programme on energy efficiency in cooperation with academicians of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), initiated under the Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP).

This noble effort of providing education to the targeted groups was known as the Energy Efficiency through Best Practices Activities at Selected Secondary Schools in the state of Melaka Programme, and it has been implemented since September 2014.

Heading the project was academician Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Wira Mohd. Shafiei who said that, the programme was aimed at educating the young generation to apply the best practices in using energy more efficiently.

He said that, attitude plays an important role in determining the success in being energy efficient, and the public needs to be continually educated to appreciate the energy sources and to avoid needless wastage.

“We are mainly focusing on the programme to promote a change in lifestyle.  Among them are positive attitudes such as switching off the lights and fans when they are not in use, using water wisely and other habits to promote energy-savings.”

“It is all about the lifestyle and through which we could educate a generation who would be more responsible and to utilise energy more efficiently,’’ he said when interviewed in conjunction with the International Conference on the Transfer of Knowledge (ICTK) 2015 here recently.

He also said that, his team is aiming to realise the objective of achieving savings up to five percent in the schools involved, compared to the situation before they had undergone the programme.

Commenting on the objective, he said that it could be successfully realised as seen from the impacts achieved for the project which would end in March next year.

“We are confident that this programme would achieve its target, which is in saving up to five percent on energy consumption.

“This programme is not only on savings and prudent resource management, as it would also provide improvements to the monitoring process of school management by those involved, including the State Education Department (JPN) and District Education Office (PPD)," he said.
