PENANG, 30 November 2015 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in collaboration with Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT), Japan provided the campus community with a closer understanding of the mind of the Nobel Prize winner in Physics (CP-Violation) 2008, Professor Dr. Makoto Kobayashi through a lecture session entitled 'Matter and Antimatter - Violation of CP Symmetry', here recently.

In front of an audience of close to 300 people, Makoto shared his vast experiences up to the point of his extraordinary discovery, which explained his study of the elementary quark particles as 'the smallest constituents' in the universe.

He received the Nobel Prize together with another well-renowned scientist from Japan, Toshihide Maskawa, who was his senior while studying at Nagoya University, Japan through their intensive work on the 'discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry which predicts the existence of at least three families of quarks in nature'.

The Vice-Chancellor of USM, Professor Dato' Dr. Omar Osman said, there were many benefits to be obtained from this programme, more specifically in having a greater understanding and exposure in the field of "particle physics".

He said, this also reflected the high commitment made by both sides in giving depth and significance on the collaboration between the two universities, USM and TUT.

He added that, the success in organising an academic lecture by a world-class genius can be considered as an academic pinnacle for USM in the research with universities in Japan.

"USM is really honoured to have Professor Dr. Makoto Kobayashi, and I am thankful that he has accepted my personal invitation to him to share his knowledge and experiences with the campus community when I met him in Japan," he said.
