INDONESIAN MINISTER AMONG THE HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS AT THE 52nd USM CONVOCATION CEREMONY
PENANG, 15 November 2015 – The Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia, Professor Dr. H. Mohamad Nasir and the Chairman of K.L.E. Society India, Dr. Prabhakar Basaprabhu Kore are among the recipients of the Honorary Doctor of Education degree in conjunction with the 52nd Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Convocation ceremony which will commence on Tuesday.
The Vice-Chancellor of USM, Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman said, beside the two above-stated figures, the Vice-Chancellor and President of Taylor’s University, Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said will be conferred the title of Professor Emeritus for his significant contributions in the field of education.
He said, the first session of the conferment ceremony will be done by H.R.H. Raja of Perlis who is also the Chancellor of USM, D.Y.M.M. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail with the conferment of degrees to 376 graduates.
“As to date, USM has successfully produced more than 100,000 graduates at various levels.”
“For this year (2015), USM has succeeded in producing 592 Ph.D. graduates, a figure that is truly encouraging and we will strive to continue with this tradition of excellence,’’ he said.
He said this at a special press conference in conjunction with the 52nd USM Convocation ceremony, at the same time, introducing the excellent and special graduates of USM, here today.
Also present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Professor Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dato’ Dr. Muhamad Jantan, USM Registrar, Siti Zubaidah A. Hamid and the key officials of the university.
Among the graduates who attended were the recipient of the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award (All-rounder Final-year student, All-round Excellence), Yiauw Diing Shenq – Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering).
In addition, two other recipients of the Royal Academic Award from the Council of Rulers Malaysia (All-round Excellence), Ahmad Faiz Bin Azar – Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil Engineering)(Bumiputera) and Chiam Swin Haur – Bachelor’s degree in Management (non- Bumiputera) also attended the ceremony.
USM also conferred the USM Gold Medal Award to a physically-challenged (visually-impaired) student (PKU), Ruvindiran a/l Mohan – Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
Among those who attended included the strong-willed graduate in Doctor of Philosophy and winner of the Penang Youth Icon award, Mohd. Sharizal Abdul Aziz – Doctor of Philosophy (Mechanical Engineering).
The Vice-Chancellor also announced that, in total USM will be conferring degrees to 5,665 graduates which includes two honorary degrees, one Professor Emeritus, 1,457 postgraduate degrees, 4,205 undergraduate degrees, 74 Nursing Diplomas and three posthumous degrees.
