PENANG, 31 August 2015 - The community of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is always called on to act responsibly as well as to protect and defend national sovereignty.

Speaking to the BULETIN USM in conjunction with the 58th National Day, USM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato' Dr. Omar Osman called on the entire campus community to be united in one accord (‘Sehati Sejiwa’ - One Heart, One Soul) to develop our beloved university and carry out its duties and functions as a tower of knowledge.

"I call on the entire USM community to remain united and to understand the real meaning and concept of independence and to understand that independence is not just a slogan but a struggle to ensure that the national sovereignty is preserved by all responsible Malaysians. As such, the entire USM community should take up the responsibility to be involved in meaningful and beneficial activities and refrain from any activities that could bring down the good name of their country and the reputation of their institution as well as harming others," said Omar.

He wishes Happy National Day to all Malaysians especially the USM community – students, staff and the alumni.

"I believe that the entire USM community including students will always continue in their struggle to ensure that the country is progressing well, and to remain sovereign and independent," said Omar.
