PENANG, 13 March 2013 – The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SoPS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) made history when it won the 4th National Pharmacy Quiz Competition held recently.

At the competition, USM successfully thumped 10 other institutions of higher learning, clinching the Tariq Cup with a special gift from the AIMST University, a trophy, certificate and RM750 cash.

Oh Shi-Minh, Tan Yaw Shen, Yeak Chee Yan, Khong Mei Juan and Nor Izreen Fazlinda Idris were SoPS’ final year students who did USM proud in the competition.

According to Assoc. Prof. Mohamed Azmi Ahmad Hassali, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Networking, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the National Pharmacy Quiz Competition is held annually for many Schools or Faculties of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Malaysia.

 

“This year, AIMST University has been selected to host the 4th National Pharmacy Quiz Competition with the theme ‘Coliseum for Intellects’, said Azmi.

The successful students were assisted by Dr. Ameer Hayat, a lecturer and also an academic advisor, and Mohamed Azmi himself.

Mohamed Azmi added that the competition consists of questions covering all areas of pharmacy career which include physiology, chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical technology, pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy.

"The Pharmacy Quiz this time not only challenged the minds of the participants but it even injected a competitive spirit among the competing teams, and provided an opportunity to the participants to find out the latest information related to pharmacy practice that is growing with the tide of modernisation."

Among the participating institutions of higher learning are the UIA, UiTM, UM, UKM, CUCMS, MSU, IMU, Taylor’s University, Monash University, and a specially invited university, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. – Translation: Yong Check Yoon
