USM 36th KUNG FU NIGHT KEEPS THE TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE IN MARTIAL ARTS
PENANG, April 2013 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) always support martial arts societies such as the Kung Fu Club in promoting martial arts among the university community especially the students and also the outside community.
According to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Omar Osman, the university fully supports programmes such as this - USM Kung Fu Night - which is not only able to expand and elevate the cultural heritage of Chinese martial arts but also to introduce and share this cultural heritage with other communities.
“I am very proud of the high sense of responsibility and commitments shown by the club members who are able to balance their achievements especially in organising large events in co-curricular activities and at the same time maintain their academic performance.
“I am also impressed with the spirit of self-reliance, team work, sharing of resources with other student associations and the volunteerism demonstrated by the members of the Kung Fu Club in their daily activities,” Omar said in his officiating speech during the USM 36th Kung Fu Night recently.
He added that the university hoped that other student societies are able to emulate the club in continuing to reach greater heights in the future, especially in organising programmes that involve the campus and off-campus community.
In the meantime, in his opening speech, Chin Teck Jiang, USM Kung Fu Night project director and also USM Kung Fu Club president, also thanked the instructors who were willing to mentor, train and provide guidance to club members for free, as well as the external sponsors for their generous contribution to the success of various projects this year.
Among the martial arts that were performed were Shaolin, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Wushu, drums, sword and dragon dance performances.
Also present were Datin Noraizan Jamaluddin, the wife of the Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Adnan Hussein, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Development) and wife; Prof. Dato’ See Ching Mey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Network) and husband; Prof. Yuen Kah Hay, USM Kung Fu Club Advisor; representative from the Department of Culture and Arts of Penang, and Mr. Lim Kim Chee, President of the Lions Club of Tanjung Penang.
Prof. Adnan and Prof. Dato’ See also displayed their ability to beat the drums when they joined the club members in the opening performance of the show.
