USM SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS ‘BEST IN COMMUNICATING SUSTAINABILITY’: HIGHLIGHTS SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICE
PENANG, March 2013 - A video shooting competition in communicating sustainability was jointly organised by the Malaysian Association of Creativity & Innovation (MACRI) and ADWAVE 2013, a Final Year Project of Persuasive Communication students from the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
This new category is part of the LINKAGES project launched by Associate Professor Dr Jamilah Hj Ahmad, Dean of the School of Communication, USM during the Creative Storytelling Forum held recently at USM. Also present were Pn. Kamaliah Hj Siarap, ADWAVE 2013 Advisor, Ms. Koh May Rui, ADWAVE 2013 Director, Mr. Ramesh Pillai, LINKAGES Project Manager and Mr. Gary Chong, a filmmaker and also a USM alumni.
According to Jamilah, the objective of this new category is to preserve the traditional wisdom of our forefathers on health and well-being as well as to associate with the element of sustainability.
“It also aims to inform the public about the importance of the adoption of sustainability in everyday life, not only in the present but also for the future.
“Sustainable development is development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The big question now is whether we can develop the wisdom and practical solutions before humans destroy the life on Earth,” said Jamilah.
Meanwhile, LINKAGES project manager, Mr. Ramesh Pillai said, “The LINKAGES project welcome all who are interested to explore ideas, tips, knowledge or expertise about the personal stories of the older generations on health care and sharing stories through short video in the most creative ways.
“This competition can inspire people to appreciate the wisdom and practice of sustainability concepts in their daily lives by using creative and innovative ideas,” he said.
This public forum is an initiative of the strategic partnership between MACRI, Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), Strategic Communications Office (SCOMM) and USM's School of Communication in the promotion of this new category of USM Sustainability Awards 'Best in Communicating Sustainability'.
In this category, participants are required to produce a video that contains two or more elements of sustainability in the economic, social and environmental aspects, and relate these elements with 'Health and Well-being'.
The national competition is open to all participants aged 15 years and above with its closing date on 30 April 2013. Winner of the grand prize for this category will take home a cash prize of RM5,000 which is sponsored by MACRI.
