MOU ON NEW FRONTIERS IN AQUACULTURE
Seberang Perai, Penang, 10 June 2013 -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS) and JEFI Aquatech Resources Sdn Bhd (JEFI) will work towards developing novel delivery systems of feed in aquaculture and the conversion of aquaculture waste through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked today between the two parties.
“We are exploring the conversion of aquaculture waste comprising shrimp shells and fish skin into value-added products,” said Prof. Peh Kok Khiang, a principal project researcher from SPS.
He added that aquaculture waste can be converted into pharmaceutical products such as glucosamine and collagen which are being used by people suffering from osteoarthritis and as a preventive measure against joint pain.
USM was represented by SPS Deputy Dean for Students Affairs and Networking, Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohamed Azmi Ahmad Hassali and Peh, while JEFI group's Chief Executive Officer, BJ Tan signed on behalf of JEFI.
JEFI is a company involved in Aquaculture Research & Development, hatchery, farming, processing, logistics and international sales and marketing.
MoUs were also signed between JEFI and China aquaculture experts, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) respectively on the same occasion at the Koridor Utara Biotech Centre, Penang Science Park, here today. -- Text and Photos: Yong Check Yoon
