CHINESE CULTURAL FESTIVAL RECEIVED OVERWHELMING RESPONSE
PENANG, 11 May 2013 - More than 600 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students, including students from Universiti Malaysia Perlis and Universiti Utara Malaysia filled the Dewan Budaya Auditorium to celebrate the Chinese Community Cultural Festival held here recently.
The programme, organised by USM Chinese Language Society, themed “Eden of Fantasy”, was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Division of Industry and Community Network, Prof. Dato’ See Ching Mey.
She delivered a speech at the event that featured cultural performances and uniqueness of the Chinese community and she also suggested that all students, regardless of their ethnicity, can learn the Chinese language.
“I will also learn to master mandarin and speak the language better. I hope that more students from USM and friends from other universities will also learn this beautiful language,” said See Ching Mey.
She further commented that everyone has dreams and each individual must have dreams for oneself, dreams for one’s family, and dreams for one’s country.
“I hope that in the context of the harmony of our country, each of us must work together and make sacrifices to ensure that our dreams are achieved. Even so, do not do negative things to realise our dreams,” she said.
In the meantime, she also congratulated the students for their creativity and innovativeness, contributing to the success of the event.
“I’m proud of the students who remember the elderly and donated the proceeds from the sale of tickets to the Happy Retirement Home,” she said commenting on the students’ concern for those who are in need.
The ceremony concluded with a presentation of cultural performance of dances, songs, and skits by the students. - Text: Mu'azzah Binti Ismail/Photo & Translation: Yong Check Yoon
