THREE OUTSTANDING GRADUATES SHARE THEIR HAPPINESS
PENANG, 17 September 2013 - Recipient of the Chancellor's Gold Medal, Yong Bang Ming shares the joy with Suzanna Awang Bono, the recipient of the Education Award of the Royal Council of Rulers of Malaysia (Bumiputera) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) 48th Convocation Ceremony press conference today. Also present were the President of the Student Representative Council of Academic Session 2012/2013, Muhammad ‘Ammar Mohd Aziz, who received the Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medal (Best Curriculum).
Bang Ming who is currently working as Assistant Engineer in Gamuda received the Anugerah Pelajaran Di Raja Majlis Raja-raja Malaysia for the non-Bumiputera category and USM Gold Medal Prize for the best final year student in Electronic Engineering.
“Besides learning in the classroom, I like to challenge myself by following various competitions at national and international level,” said Bang Ming who had won a gold medal in the British Invention Show 2012 competition.
Suzanna who would be graduating in the field of Social Sciences has received an offer to further her education in psychology at the University of York while ‘Ammar also intends to further his study in USM.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of graduates produced by USM. Since the start of the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX) in 2008, more than 69 % of the graduates are pursuing their Ph.D. However, USM is targeting a total of more than 500 Ph.D. graduates to be produced every year,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman.
“USM will strive to improve the quality of its undergraduates and also postgraduates to enable them to pursue their Ph.D.,” added Omar.
At the same press conference, the appointment of a third Pro-Chancellor Tan Sri Datuk Mustafa Mansur was also announced. Mustafa is USM alumni who graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) majoring in Political Science in 1976.
In addition, USM will also confer Emeritus Professor to the former Dean and Founding Director of the USM Health Campus, Professor Dato’ Dr. Roslani Abdul Majid, and an Honorary Doctor of Science degree to the well-known corporate figure who is the Texchem Founding Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Fumihiko Konishi.
This time, there are 5,427 graduates including 1,194 postgraduates and 74 others who will be receiving their diplomas in seven sessions starting 19 to 22 September 2013. - Translation: Yong Check Yoon/Photo: Mohd Fairus Md Isa
