USM LECTURERS SHINE IN KUWAIT
PENANG, 26 November 2013 - Two lecturers of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) brought honour to the University and the nation when they bagged two gold medals in the 6th International Invention Fair in the Middle East (IIFME 2013) in Kuwait City, recently.
Both of them were the Dean of the School of Materials and Mineral Resources, Professor Dr. Hanafi Ismail, and lecturer from the School of Biological Sciences, Professor Dr. Chan Lai Keng.
Hanafi won a gold medal in his research, “OilZob - A Novel Oil Absorbent” while Lai Keng’s innovation is titled “High Valued Products Using Plant Cell Culture Tank” which also received the attention and praise of the jury.
IIFME 2013 which has become the largest invention competition in the Middle East was attended by researchers from 19 countries including the United Kingdom, Russia, Taiwan, Iran, Iraq, Romania, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar.
A total of 150 products competed with strict entry requirements where every product should have a patent. The patron of IIFME is the Amir of Kuwait, Sheik Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. - Translation: Yong Check Yoon/Photo: Mohd Fairus Md. Isa
