PENANG, November 2014 - In conjunction with the 50^th Convocation Ceremony of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), a Research Excellence Exhibition was also held here for six days.

The Chancellor, D.Y.M.M. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail consented to officiate the exhibition which showcased 21 research products to the public and the campus community.

According to USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Omar Osman, the exhibition was organised to showcase USM’s achievements and accolades received – not the entire collection of research but 21 products of research excellence – reflecting USM’s effort in promoting a culture of research and innovation which is the cornerstone of the university’s strength as a Research University.

“USM will strive to allow its excellence to be manifested and felt by all stakeholders through its Industry and Community Network, Community Engagement, Knowledge Transfer, Centres of Excellence, and also a variety of existing disciplines,” said the Vice-Chancellor.

“The real measure does not only manifest in the products for commercialisation but also in terms of contributions in science, writing, publishing, and they are of no lesser importance as they enhance social innovation, improve the competitiveness of the community in the face of global competition and provide direct benefits to be enjoyed by the community,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Datuk Mustafa Mansur and his wife accompanied Tuanku Chancellor and D.Y.M.M. Tuanku Raja Perempuan Perlis to visit the exhibition booths.

Research exhibits included those from the Research Success group, Product Commercialisation, and the Industry and Community Network.

Among the exhibits were the Continuous Production of Carbon Nanotubes with Rotating Reactor, the Pioneering Drug Addiction Treatment, Membrane Science and Technology Cluster, and USM Archaeological Research.

Also present were the Minister of Education of Brunei Darussalam, Pehin Orang Kaya Kerna Dato’ Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar Haji Apong; Chairman of the USM Board of Governors, Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Zulkefli A.
