USM-PPPJJ INSPIRES FUTURE SCIENTISTS THROUGH HANDS-ON STEM PROGRAMME

PENANG, 10 July 2026 – The Chemistry Section of the School of Distance Education (PPPJJ), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), successfully organised the Hands-on Experiments and Scientific Approaches in Chemistry programme for Form 4 and Form 5 students from Methodist Girls’ School (MGS), Penang.

The programme, led by Dr. Gunasunderi Raju from the Chemistry Section, was held at the SDE Teaching Laboratory (J16) and provided students with an engaging introduction to the world of chemistry through immersive, hands-on STEM activities.

The initiative aimed to strengthen students' understanding of chemistry through practical laboratory experience while demonstrating how scientific concepts are applied in everyday life and modern technology.

Representing the Dean of the School of Distance Education, Associate Professor Dr. Asyraf Mansor highlighted the importance of providing students with meaningful exposure to STEM from an early age.

"Hands-on learning transforms curiosity into discovery. Through programmes like this, we hope to inspire more young minds to explore science, develop critical thinking skills, and pursue future careers in STEM," he said.

Through a series of guided experiments, participants developed essential laboratory skills, enhanced their scientific reasoning and problem-solving abilities, and gained first-hand experience in a university laboratory environment.

The programme featured three interactive experimental sessions conducted by SDE-USM academic and support staff, who guided students through scientific investigations designed to stimulate curiosity and encourage critical thinking.

The sessions also provided participants with valuable exposure to STEM learning beyond the classroom, helping them to appreciate the practical applications of chemistry.

Speaking on the initiative, the organising committee noted that programmes such as these play a vital role in nurturing young talent and fostering greater interest in STEM disciplines from an early stage.

By engaging secondary school students through meaningful learning experiences, USM continues to inspire future scientists while reinforcing its commitment to community outreach and quality STEM education.

The initiative reflects the Chemistry Section's ongoing commitment to promoting science education and cultivating the next generation of innovators through experiential learning.

It also supports USM's aspiration to encourage more students to pursue higher education and careers in chemistry and other science-related fields.
