KUALA LUMPUR, 3 July 2026 – Sustainability is no longer a peripheral concern. It has become a defining agenda for governments, industries, communities and institutions navigating climate risks, resource pressures, ESG expectations and the need for responsible growth.

Against this backdrop, the sustainability-related postgraduate programmes at Universiti Sains Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (USM@KL) received encouraging attention during the USM@KL Open Day, reflecting growing interest among professionals, researchers and prospective postgraduate candidates who want to contribute meaningfully to sustainability transformation.

The programmes offer flexible postgraduate pathways for individuals seeking to advance their knowledge and expertise in sustainable development, ESG practices, climate-related issues and responsible governance. At USM@KL, this area of study is offered through master’s by coursework, master’s by research and doctoral-level pathways, providing opportunities for both industry-driven professional development and research-based academic advancement.

Among the programmes highlighted was the Master in Sustainable Development Practice (MSDP), a multidisciplinary postgraduate programme designed for individuals who wish to understand sustainability beyond theory and translate knowledge into practical solutions. Visitors engaged with academic representatives to explore how the programme connects environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic development while preparing students to respond to real-world challenges across the public, private and community sectors.

“The USM Open Day provides an important opportunity for prospective students to engage directly with academic staff and better understand the postgraduate pathways available at Universiti Sains Malaysia. At the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), we hope to show that sustainability is not only an academic field, but also a practical and urgent area of work that connects policy, research, industry and communities,” said Dr. Suzyrman Sibly, Coordinator for Master’s Coursework Programme.

The coursework pathway equips students with the knowledge, analytical skills and practical competencies required to design and implement sustainable solutions. Its curriculum places emphasis on evidence-based decision-making, stakeholder engagement, policy implementation and responsible leadership, ensuring graduates are able to work across complex sustainability issues that require both technical understanding and human-centred judgement.

For those interested in deeper academic inquiry, the research-based master’s and doctoral pathways provide opportunities to explore specialised areas related to sustainability, ESG, climate transition, environmental governance, carbon management, social impact and sustainable policy development. Associate Professor Dr. Ng Theam Foo, Deputy Director and Coordinator of EPEHub, USM, said the future workforce must be prepared to address sustainability challenges through knowledge, innovation and responsible leadership.

He noted that as ESG reporting becomes increasingly important for public-listed companies, students must understand not only the principles of sustainable development, but also emerging issues such as carbon emissions and carbon markets, which are increasingly shaping business practices and environmental governance.

The Open Day also provided visitors with personalised academic consultations and admissions guidance, allowing them to understand the available postgraduate pathways, learning outcomes, research opportunities, career prospects and the growing value of sustainability expertise in today’s global economy.
