KUALA LUMPUR, 3 July 2026 – Mathematics plays a vital role in shaping critical thinking, analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Yet, for many learners, the subject is often seen as difficult or intimidating. This makes the role of confident, knowledgeable and effective mathematics educators more important than ever.

Recognising this need, the Master of Science in Teaching of Mathematics at Universiti Sains Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (USM@KL) attracted interest from educators, aspiring academics and education professionals during the USM@KL Open Day.

The programme was introduced as a postgraduate pathway for individuals who want to deepen their mathematical understanding while improving the way mathematics is taught and experienced by learners. Throughout the Open Day, prospective students engaged with academic representatives to explore the programme’s curriculum, research opportunities and relevance to the future of mathematics education.

Unlike programmes that focus only on teaching techniques, the Master of Science in Teaching of Mathematics places equal importance on mathematical content. Students are exposed to advanced areas such as Number Theory, Euclidean Geometry, Probability Theory and Operations Research, while also engaging with contemporary teaching approaches that promote meaningful learning.

This distinctive balance allows educators to build both subject mastery and instructional confidence. It prepares them to design learning experiences that make mathematics more accessible, relevant and engaging for students.

According to Dr. Maisarah from the School of Mathematical Sciences, effective mathematics teaching begins with a deep understanding of mathematics itself.

She said mathematics should not be viewed as a subject to be feared, but as a powerful tool that nurtures critical thinking, analytical reasoning and confident problem-solving. She also noted that the programme’s flexible learning approach enables working professionals to pursue postgraduate study while continuing to progress in their careers.

During the Open Day, visitors also received personalised academic consultations and admissions guidance, allowing them to understand the programme’s flexible learning pathway, academic support and professional development opportunities.

Through the Master of Science in Teaching of Mathematics, USM@KL continues to develop educators who can make mathematics meaningful, inspire confidence among learners and contribute to a stronger foundation for future generations.
