PULAU PINANG, 1st July 2026 – The School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), successfully organised a three-day, two-night Community Service and Educational Trip to Perhentian Island from 26 to 28 June 2026.

The programme brought together first-year Construction Project Management students and staffs in an experiential learning initiative designed to promote environmental awareness, community engagement, teamwork, and the development of stronger interpersonal bonds among participants.

The programme commenced on 26 June with the participants' arrival at Perhentian Island in the east coast state of Terengganu, followed by check-in and a briefing session. In the afternoon, participants enjoyed free-and-easy activities, including hiking, kayaking, and exploring the island's natural beauty. The evening featured an interactive "Apple & Onion" ice-breaking session, where participants shared positive qualities and constructive feedback about one another in a fun and respectful environment. The activity successfully fostered friendship, trust, and camaraderie among the students.

The highlight of the programme took place on 27 June, with the participants engaging in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme in collaboration with the Perhentian Turtle Project (PTP).

As part of the CSR initiative, students participated in a beach clean-up activity involving the collection, sorting, and weighing of waste along the shoreline. The programme aimed to promote environmental stewardship and raise awareness of the importance of preserving the island’s natural ecosystem.

All collected waste was systematically categorised before being transported by boat to a designated collection point, in ensuring proper waste management practices. The activity encouraged participants to contribute directly to coastal conservation while fostering a stronger sense of social responsibility.

Following that, participants took part in an eco-snorkelling programme in the afternoon, where they held a snorkelling activity and explored the crystal-clear waters surrounding Perhentian Island and observed its diverse marine life. Participants first took part in a water confidence session designed to help them build comfort, control, and safety awareness in open water conditions. This was followed by a structured 5-point snorkelling programme, where participants were guided through five designated snorkelling areas to progressively develop their skills and confidence in the water. The experience provided participants with a deeper appreciation of coral reef ecosystems and highlighted the importance of marine conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

On the morning of 28 June, participants took part in a series of traditional team-building games (‘Sukan Rakyat’) designed to strengthen communication, cooperation, and leadership skills in a fun and engaging environment. The activities fostered teamwork and healthy competition while creating lasting memories among the participants. The programme concluded with an exciting Exchange Gift session, which added a spirit of appreciation, gratitude, and friendship before the participants bid farewell to one another.

Following a reflection session, participants departed from Perhentian Island, marking the end of the three-day programme. Throughout the trip, students gained invaluable experiences in environmental conservation, community engagement, teamwork, and leadership, while forging meaningful friendships and creating unforgettable memories that will remain with them long after the programme had ended.

The successful organisation of this programme reflects the commitment by HBP USM in providing holistic education that extends beyond the classroom. By integrating community service, environmental sustainability, and experiential learning, the programme has equipped students with essential life skills while reinforcing the USM aspiration to produce graduates who are socially responsible, environmentally conscious, and committed to sustainable development.

HBP USM also extends its sincere appreciation to the Perhentian Turtle Project (PTP) and all collaborators for their support in making this meaningful programme a success. It is hoped that similar initiatives will continue to strengthen partnerships between academia and conservation organisations while inspiring future generations to protect Malaysia's rich natural heritage.
