SRMUSM FRIENDSHIP OUTREACH STRENGTHENS EMPATHY, BRINGS JOY TO SENIOR CITIZENS
USM PENANG, 2 May 2026 – In an effort to strengthen the role of students as agents of social awareness, various volunteerism and community-based initiatives continue to be actively implemented to cultivate empathy within the community.
These community-centred programmes not only serve as a bridge connecting students and the community but also play an important role in nurturing values of compassion, mutual respect, and sensitivity towards those in need, particularly senior citizens, also including persons with disabilities (PWDs).
In line with this aspiration, the Universiti Sains Malaysia Sekretariat Rakan Muda (SRMUSM), with the participation of 52 members comprising the SRM Supreme Council and Exco members, organised the Rakan Prihatin: Jalinan Mesra Programme at Pusat Jagaan Gemilang, Sungai Petani, Kedah on 30 April.
The programme involved approximately 20 senior citizens consisting of elderly residents and PWDs, who participated in a variety of activities designed to strengthen relationships and create a cheerful atmosphere at the care centre.
Led by Project Director, Nur Anis Syahirah Khairul Nizam, participants took part in various interactive and recreational activities such as “Senyum dan Sasar,” a ball-throwing game aimed at creating joy and excitement, and “Memory Blast,” which involved collaborative writing and drawing activities to stimulate memory and encourage interaction.
In addition, a social engagement session was held, providing opportunities for students and senior citizens to share experiences and build closer relationships.
Also present to provide guidance were SRMUSM Advisor, Tuan Salman Tuan Mohd Jaffar, together with Mohd Amar Aiman in his capacity as the manager.
Their presence highlighted a strong commitment towards supporting the programme, which aimed to strengthen emotional support for the residents while fostering a more positive sense of togetherness.
Tuan Salman said, “Through the implementation of this programme, participants not only have the opportunity to contribute to society but are also exposed to the realities of the lives of senior citizens, thereby nurturing empathy, volunteerism, and a sense of social responsibility among students.”
This initiative indirectly supports the USM H.E.B.A.T agenda through active involvement in community service, while also advancing the aspirations of S4S, particularly in social services, which emphasises the importance of care, community well-being, and continuous efforts to assist those in need.
