USM STRENGTHENS UNIVERSITY–INDUSTRY STRATEGIC COLLABORATION WITH GHEE HIANG IN CONJUNCTION WITH MBOR RECOGNITION

PENANG, 13 June 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) continues to strengthen its strategic industry partnerships by celebrating the achievement of Penang’s iconic heritage brand, Ghee Hiang, which has been officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the country’s oldest traditional Chinese biscuit brand, marking the company’s 170th anniversary.
The recognition ceremony, held at St. Giles Wembley Hotel, was attended by USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, together with the Dean of the School of Distance Education (PPPJJ), Associate Professor Dr. Zulnaidi Yaacob, and Associate Professor ChM Dr. Tan Wen Nee, a lecturer and researcher at PPPJJ who is actively involved in joint research with Ghee Hiang.
USM’s presence underscored the university’s ongoing commitment to driving research and innovation that contribute to economic development while preserving local heritage.
Abdul Rahman emphasised that the strategic collaboration between USM and Ghee Hiang highlights the importance of university–industry relations in enhancing product innovation and technology transfer.
“Through the involvement of USM researchers, various initiatives have been explored to support the development of more competitive products without neglecting the traditional values that define the brand’s identity.
“This MBOR recognition opens wider opportunities for collaboration between USM and industry in advancing innovation, sustainability, and economic development rooted in local heritage and culture,” he said.

He further added, “This synergy not only boosts industry competitiveness but also contributes to preserving the nation’s traditional food heritage through scientific and innovative approaches.”
The ceremony was graced by the presence of former Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak; Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow; and Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development of Malaysia, Lim Hui Ying.
Founded in 1856, Ghee Hiang has grown from a family business into a heritage brand synonymous with Penang, renowned for its signature products such as ‘tau sar pneah’ (green bean biscuits) and sesame oil.
In his speech, Chow described Ghee Hiang as an integral part of Penang’s cultural identity and heritage, a source of pride for generations of Penangites, while stressing that heritage and innovation can progress hand in hand.
Meanwhile, Ghee Hiang Executive Director Datuk Ch’ng Huck Theng shared the company’s transformation journey over the past two decades, which included introducing new products, developing modern retail concepts, and investing in research and development through collaborations with higher education institutions, including USM.
The Malaysia Book of Records recognition not only celebrates Ghee Hiang’s 170-year legacy but also proves that heritage brands can continue to thrive internationally without compromising the traditional values that form the foundation of their success.
