‘RIPPLE’ DRAWS ATTENTION, CLINCHES THIRD PLACE IN SPAN 2026 CREATIVE VIDEO COMPETITION
USM PENANG, 11 April 2026 – A thought‑provoking video submission entitled ‘Ripple,’ highlighting the vital role of water in sustaining life and the impact of human actions on nature, has won Third Place in the SPAN 2026 Creative Video Competition, organised by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).
Produced by students from the Acting and Directing Unit, School of the Arts (PPS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), ‘Ripple’ stood out among 197 entries nationwide, competing in two categories: AI Video and Conventional Video.
This achievement underscores the creativity and commitment of USM students in addressing pressing environmental issues through the arts, while also showcasing the university’s strength in nurturing talent that bridges artistic expression with social awareness.
Making use of the ‘ripple effect’ concept, the video illustrates how even the smallest actions in water usage can create far‑reaching consequences for life and the environment. At the same time, it shows the importance of cultivating awareness and responsibility in managing this precious resource effectively.
The project was carried out under the tutelage of a lecturer from PPS, Dr. Azrul Azizi Amirrul, who was also present together with the student representatives at the prize-giving ceremony, held on 9 April at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Azrul Azizi said, the achievement in the Conventional Video category stands as clear evidence of the students’ capability to compete and excel on a national creative platform.
He added that it reflects their strength in weaving together a compelling narrative, imaginative visuals, and technical proficiency, culminating in a production of significant impact.
“They not only demonstrate talent in stage performance, but also excel in exploring the digital medium with professionalism and skill, aligning with the current demands of the creative industry,” he said.
He further noted that participation in such a prestigious competition has provided the students with invaluable exposure to industry standards, while also fostering their confidence in creating impactful artistic works.
“The success also highlights the capability of PPS USM students in mastering visual production techniques, a discipline that demands both a high level of imagination and a strong command of narrative construction,” he said further.
He added, the achievement is hoped to serve as a catalyst to spur more success by USM students in the field of creative media and performing arts industry in the future.
