DATO’ CHEOK LAY LENG APPOINTED AS ADJUNCT FELLOW AT USM’S SCHOOL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

USM PENANG, 25 May 2026 – The General Manager of Penang Hill Corporation, Dato’ Cheok Lay Leng, has been appointed as an Adjunct Fellow at the School of Distance Education (PPPJJ), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

This appointment is a recognition of his experience, expertise, and contributions in the fields of management and community development.

Dean of PPPJJ, Associate Professor Dr. Zulnaidi Yaacob, expressed his hope that the appointment would open more opportunities for strategic collaboration between PPPJJ USM and the Penang Hill Corporation.

According to Zulnaidi, potential areas of collaboration include joint research, knowledge-sharing, and obtaining industry perspectives and input from organisations such as the Penang Hill Corporation.

“PPPJJ is a multidisciplinary school of learning. Collaboration with agencies and industry players is crucial in strengthening academic, research, and community development,” he said.

He further added that the involvement of industry leaders in academia helps ensure that study programmes remain relevant, practical, and aligned with current industry and societal needs.

As an Adjunct Fellow, Cheok is expected to play a key role in strengthening networks between the university, industry, and society.

His responsibilities will include sharing expertise through seminars, workshops, and experience-based engagements with students and academic staff.

He will also serve as a curriculum advisor to ensure that academic syllabi remain aligned with industry demands.

His participation in collaborative research projects is anticipated to add value to USM’s high-impact initiatives.

At the same time, Cheok will act as an industry mentor to both students and lecturers, helping to produce graduates who are more competitive and prepared to face the challenges of the professional world.

This appointment is expected to reinforce strategic ties between USM and the industry sector, in line with national efforts to strengthen human capital development and deliver high-quality education.
