USM PENANG, 4 May 2026 - The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Physics has taken a step towards positioning itself as a regional hub for spectroscopy technology demonstration and verification in Southeast Asia.

This move was the result of a visit by a delegation from Optosky Photonics Inc., China, recently.

The delegation was led by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Liu Hongfei, accompanied by Project Manager, Jansen Liang and R&D Manager, Dr. Ding Kai.

The visit was aimed to strengthen the ongoing collaboration under an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), while supporting preparations for the 1st Malaysia Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Meeting (MNIRSM 2026).

A key highlight of the engagement was Optosky’s intention to develop the USM School of Physics to become its Southeast Asia hub for technology demonstration and verification.

The proposed collaboration centre is expected to support application development, customer training and technology validation across the region.

Building on the MoU, both parties are working towards a more comprehensive Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), and with the implementation to be done in phases over the next three years.

Both sides would also explore potential collaborations in research, instrumentation support and laboratory development, with a focus on advancing optical spectroscopy applications in areas such as semiconductors, photonics, environmental monitoring, agriculture and medical diagnostics.

The engagement included knowledge exchange on advanced spectroscopic technologies, as well as discussions on future joint research initiatives and funding opportunities.

The visit reflects the shared commitment between USM and Optosky Photonics Inc. in advancing research, innovation and industry collaboration in spectroscopy, while reinforcing Malaysia’s standing in the regional scientific landscape.
