PENANG, 6 May 2026 – The Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), had the privilege of welcoming a delegation from the Embassy of France in Malaysia, led by the Ambassador of France to Malaysia, His Excellency Marc Abensour, during a recent courtesy visit to the centre.

The French delegation was warmly received upon arrival by the CEMACS team led by its Director, Associate Professor Dr. Mahadi Mohammad, who extended the centre’s appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed the importance of fostering strong international partnerships in marine and coastal research.

Held on 27 April, the visit underscored the significance of global collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge and sustainable practices.
As part of the programme, a dedicated briefing was delivered by the former Director and Honorary Professor of CEMACS, Dato’ Dr. Aileen Tan Shau Hwai, who provided an overview of the centre’s strategic research directions, ongoing projects, and areas of expertise.

The briefing also outlined potential avenues for collaboration, particularly in addressing emerging challenges in marine environments through interdisciplinary and science-based approaches.

The delegation was also introduced to CEMACS’ key research and education areas, highlighting its contributions to ocean sustainability, coastal ecosystem management, and community-based environmental initiatives.
The engagement created a valuable platform for both parties to exchange insights and explore opportunities for cooperation.

Discussions were described as highly productive, leading to the consolidation of potential future collaborative actions between CEMACS and French institutions in areas of shared interest.
The delegation also had the opportunity to interact with researchers and staff, gaining deeper insight into CEMACS’ role as a leading marine research institution in the region.

In his remarks, Mahadi expressed gratitude for the visit, noting: “We are honoured to host His Excellency and the French delegation. This engagement reflects our shared commitment to safeguarding marine and coastal ecosystems, and we look forward to future collaborations that will strengthen research and education in this vital field.”
