Held at Anjung Jannatun, the official residence of the Vice-Chancellor of USM, the evening carried significance that surpassed a ceremonial engagement. It reflected a convergence of history, heritage and contemporary global collaboration.

Welcoming distinguished guests, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed described the gathering as part of the 2nd Joint Committee Meeting between Malaysia and the Republic of Türkiye on Higher Education. He extended a warm welcome to representatives from both nations and highlighted Penang as the Pearl of the Orient, noting that George Town stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that symbolises global exchange and cultural convergence.

Anjung Jannatun stands as more than an architectural landmark. Built in 1938 during the colonial era, the residence today serves as a space of institutional leadership. Its name honours Dato’ Jannatun, an early settler who arrived in Batu Uban from Sumatera in 1749, well before the establishment of Penang as a colonial port. As one of the earliest Malay pioneers in the region, his legacy reflects resilience, foresight and the foundations of early community building.

By hosting an international delegation at this historically grounded venue, USM conveyed a subtle yet powerful message that meaningful global partnerships are anchored in policy and progress, while remaining deeply rooted in identity, memory and cultural continuity.

The evening brought together key figures from both nations, with the Malaysian side graced by the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Zambry Abd Kadir, alongside the Vice-Chancellor of USM. The delegation from the Republic of Türkiye was led by Erol Özvar, accompanied by Necmeddin Bilal Erdoğan and senior representatives from the Council of Higher Education Türkiye. The evening was further enlivened by the special presence of football icon Mesut Özil, whose appearance drew warm attention from attendees, many of whom took the opportunity to catch a glimpse and capture memorable moments.

This setting provided an important counterbalance to the structured forums held throughout the programme. It allowed relationships to deepen organically while reinforcing trust and mutual respect, which are essential for sustained international collaboration.

In many respects, the evening at Anjung Jannatun captured the essence of the Malaysia Türkiye engagement. It is a partnership rooted in history, strengthened through dialogue, and oriented towards a shared future.

As USM continues to strengthen its role as a convening ground for global thought leadership, engagements of this calibre affirm its position as a trusted partner in shaping the future of higher education. More than a host institution, it serves as a platform where ideas translate into collaboration and collaboration into lasting impact. Grounded in heritage and guided by institutional purpose, USM advances partnerships that not only address present priorities but also lay the foundation for sustained academic, policy and leadership excellence across regions.
