HBP-USM STUDENT SHINES IN SINGAPORE, WINS JUDGES' PICK AWARD AT YOUNG MAYOR COMPETITION 2026

USM PENANG, 27 April 2026 – A group of five students from the Urban and Regional Planning programme at the School of Housing, Building, and Planning (HBP), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), achieved remarkable success in the prestigious Young Mayor Competition 2026, held in Singapore National Library, Singapore recently.

The team, representing HBP-USM, consisted of Mohammad Nazmi Naim Mohd Nazri, Muhammad Asyraf Mohd Kahar, Nursyaleena Sahedan, Nurul Atiqah Nor Rafizan, and Raza Zikri Rohizan.

They were mentored by two lecturers, Dr. Shida Irwana Omar and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suraiyati Rahman from the Urban and Regional Planning programme at HBP, USM.

The competition, held from 10 to 12 April 2026 and organised by Activistar, brought together youth leaders from across Southeast Asia to focus on urban planning and sustainability.

This year’s case study centred on “Planning a Clean and Green City” in Dili, Timor-Leste, a city with unique urban challenges and development opportunities, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Participants were tasked with proposing innovative solutions to urban issues such as housing, transportation, waste management, and economic growth, all while incorporating sustainable practices.

The team from HBP-USM received significant recognition for their efforts.

Muhammad Asyraf was awarded the Judges' Pick Award 2026. This award was presented by His Excellency, Alexandre Tilman, the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Singapore.

Muhammad Asyraf exceptional presentation skills and innovative approach to sustainable urban development earned him this prestigious accolade.

His presentation focused on balancing rapid urban growth with environmental preservation, proposing solutions such as integrating green spaces, enhancing public transportation, and encouraging eco-friendly building practices. This well-researched and visionary approach left a lasting impression on the judges.

Reflecting on the success, the Dean of HBP, Assoc. Prof. Sr. Ts. Dr. Md Azree Othuman Mydin, expressed his pride and admiration for the team's achievement: "We are immensely proud of Asyraf and his team for their outstanding performance. This victory not only showcases their individual talents but also underscores the high calibre of students we nurture at HBP-USM.”

“It highlights the effectiveness of our educational approach, which integrates technical expertise with creativity, leadership, and problem-solving skills.”

“Our students are encouraged to think critically, push boundaries, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges, which is exactly what this competition demanded. Their success is a proof to the hard work, dedication, and innovative mindset instilled in them throughout their studies,” added Md Azree.

He said, “We are confident that this achievement will inspire others within the school and beyond to aim high and make meaningful contributions to the field of urban planning and sustainability."

USM’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed also lauded the achievement, emphasising the importance of international exposure for students.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, “International experiences play a key role in ensuring students are prepared for a globalised world. These opportunities allow students to engage with real-world challenges, fostering innovation, and broadening their perspectives, which are essential for future leaders in urban planning and sustainability.

“Such exposure not only enhances their academic and professional skills but also cultivates the leadership qualities required to address pressing urban planning and sustainability issues.

“This achievement not only enhances the profile of USM but also promotes their global reputation in urban planning and sustainability. Additionally, this recognition opens new doors for cross-border collaborations and opportunities in Southeast Asia.

“The success of the team serves as evidence to the high standard of education and mentorship at HBP-USM, further solidifying the university’s reputation as a leader in urban planning and sustainability education,” he said.
