RM158,400 ALUMNI ZAKAT FUND ASSISTS 396 B40 STUDENTS

USM PENANG, 17 April 2026 – The compassion of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) alumni was once again demonstrated when RM158,400 was successfully raised to support students from the B40 category through the Alumni and Partners Zakat Contribution Ceremony, held at Dewan Pembangunan Siswa 1 (DPS 1), Kompleks Cahaya Siswa, USM, this afternoon.
The meaningful occasion saw 396 B40 students each receiving RM400, reflecting the noble commitment of alumni and partners who consistently support the welfare of underprivileged USM students.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, in his speech, conveyed heartfelt appreciation to the contributors, comprising entrepreneurs and alumni, particularly philanthropic figures who played a significant role in ensuring the success of the programme.

“The true value of this contribution lies not merely in the monetary amount, but in the sincerity and spirit of sharing sustenance, which form the essence of this noble practice,” he said.
He further highlighted that thousands of USM students fall within the B40 category, and initiatives such as this represent ongoing efforts to safeguard their welfare.

“Recipients were carefully selected, focusing on Muslim students who are active in their studies and not receiving other forms of aid, thereby ensuring assistance reaches those most in need,” Abdul Rahman added.

The ceremony was further enriched by a friendly interaction session between students and benefactors, strengthening bonds while instilling gratitude and appreciation among recipients.

Also present were USM Board of Governors member, Mohd Ali Mohd Salleh; Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Development Affairs and Alumni, Professor Dr. Wan Ahmad Jaafar Wan Yahaya; Senior Deputy Registrar of Student Development Affairs and Alumni Division, Shukeri A. Rahaman; President of USM Alumni Association, Ir. Ts. Kamarul Badlishah Kamarulzaman; and representing the zakat contribution programme coordinator, Datin Rohayati Ismail.
