ASPEN GROUP’S DATO' SERI NAZIR ARIFF DRIVES INDUSTRY-ACADEMIA SYNERGY AT HBP-USM

USM PENANG, 14 April 2026 – The School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), recently received a visit from a prominent figure in the construction industry, Dato’ Seri Nazir Ariff Mushir Ariff, co-founder and Deputy Executive Chairman of Aspen (Group) Holdings Limited.

His presence was welcomed by the top management and lecturers at HBP, who had the opportunity to gain deeper insight into the construction industry from a holistic perspective.

The sharing session, held in an academic and professional atmosphere, gave Nazir Ariff the opportunity to share his extensive experience and insights in the world of construction.

He outlined the challenges and opportunities in the construction sector and shared his views on the future of the industry.

During the session, Nazir Ariff emphasised the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in ensuring the development of a sustainable and competitive construction sector.

He said that academia provides the theoretical foundation, while industry offers the practical space to apply the knowledge learned.

“Collaboration between universities and industry needs to be strengthened. Students should be given the opportunity to go through real-world practical processes through industrial training and joint research projects,” said Nazir Ariff.

He also suggested that more collaborative programmes be implemented to empower students with relevant skills and improve their employability in the rapidly growing construction industry.

Nazir Ariff also shared the importance of innovation in the construction sector.

According to him, innovation does not only involve new technology, but also project management methods and the efficient use of resources.

“Sustainable construction and the use of green technology are now major focuses in the industry. They not only improve project quality, but also reduce cost and time,” he added.

In addition, he also touched on smart technology in urban development, which enables more efficient and environmentally friendly planning.

“This innovation not only benefits developers, but also society and the environment.”

In a discussion with lecturers, Nazir Ariff suggested that lecturers should be more sensitive to the latest developments in the construction industry.

“Education that is relevant to industry needs will ensure that students are prepared to face real challenges,” he said.

HBP USM continues to play an important role in educating the next generation of professionals in the field of construction.

The presence of Nazir Ariff adds another dimension to the university’s efforts to ensure that students receive direct exposure to the real construction world.

“Collaboration with industry figures such as Dato’ Seri Nazir Ariff gives us the opportunity to improve the curriculum and involve students in relevant research projects,” said the Dean of HBP, Associate Professor Sr Ts. Dr. Md Azree Othuman Mydin.

“Nazir Ariff’s visit to HBP is an important milestone for USM, proving that the relationship between academia and industry is the key to success in developing a sustainable construction sector,” he added.  

Nazir Ariff also offered his assistance in becoming a bridge between academia and industry, providing great opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in the real world.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, has long been a strong advocate for bridging the gap between academia and industry.

His vision is to ensure that USM continues to produce graduates who are not only academically proficient but also well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the ever-evolving professional world.

The involvement of prominent industry figures in academic activities is an integral part of this vision.

The Vice-Chancellor believes that such collaborations provide students with real-world insights and practical knowledge, enriching their academic experience and enhancing their employability.

He emphasises that fostering strong relationships between academia and industry will lead to the development of sustainable and innovative solutions for the future, while also positioning USM as a leading institution in nurturing the next generation of industry leaders.

USM, through HBP, will play an important role in ensuring that its students are ready to face the challenges of the construction industry and become competitive leaders in this sector.

HBP Dean added, “By providing high-quality education, relevant practical training, and direct exposure to the latest developments in the construction industry, HBP is determined to shape graduates who are not only technically skilled, but also capable of pioneering innovation and contributing to sustainable development.”
