HALF A CENTURY OF LEGACY: USM KUNG FU CLUB STILL GOING STRONG WITH 46TH KUNG FU NIGHT ON 10 MAY 2026

USM PENANG, 3 April 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through the USM Kung Fu Club, will celebrate a historic milestone with the 46th Kung Fu Night, held in conjunction with the club’s 50th anniversary.
This cultural showcase will take place at Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra (DTSP), USM main campus, on 10 May 2026 at 8.00 p.m., and is expected to be officiated by the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Chow Kon Yeow.
Founded in 1976, the USM Kung Fu Club is one of the earliest martial arts clubs on campus, comprising five divisions: Shaolin, Taiji, Wushu, Drum, and Dragon & Lion Dance.

For five decades, the club has not only promoted the art of Kung Fu but also served as a bridge for unity and cultural exchange among students and the wider community.
Advisor of the USM Kung Fu Club, Associate Professor Dr. Ng Theam Foo, remarked, “Kung Fu Night is more than a martial arts performance; it is a platform to unite society through culture and the spirit of togetherness.”
He added, “This 50th anniversary celebration reflects the dedication and commitment of members and stakeholders who have contributed ideas, energy, and time to preserve the Kung Fu heritage at USM.”

Project Director of the 46th Kung Fu Night, Lim Ther How, shared, “We are honoured to organise this historic event. By blending traditional and modern performances, we aim to showcase the beauty of Kung Fu and highlight the club’s 50-year journey.”
He further expressed gratitude: “On behalf of the USM Kung Fu Club, I extend our deepest appreciation to USM’s top management, especially the Division of Student Development Affairs and Alumni (BHEPA), for their continuous support in realising the club’s vision and mission.”
Last year’s 45th Kung Fu Night, themed “The Destined (天命),” drew more than 1,500 spectators.
Ng said, “The event symbolised a powerful revival for the USM Kung Fu Club after the disruptions and delays brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“It not only marked the return of live performances but also reignited the club’s spirit, reaffirmed its resilience, and strengthened its determination to continue preserving and promoting the art of Kung Fu for future generations,” he added.

This year’s celebration is expected to attract USM staff and students, secondary school students across Penang, and local residents eager to experience the richness of martial arts and cultural traditions.
The USM Kung Fu Club warmly invites the public to join the 46th Kung Fu Night and the 50th Anniversary Celebration, an event that not only honours the Kung Fu heritage but also strengthens unity and cultural spirit in Penang.
