USM HOSTS JAKEL’S ZAKAT WAKALAH DISTRIBUTION TO 31 MOSQUES IN NORTHEAST PENANG

USM PENANG, 5 March 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was honoured to host the zakat wakalah distribution programme organised by Jakel Textile Sdn. Bhd., one of Malaysia’s leading textile companies.

The initiative involved 31 mosques across the Northeast district of Penang.

The event, held at Masjid Al-Malik Khalid, USM, brought together mosque chairpersons and representatives to receive food baskets for distribution to asnaf (eligible zakat recipients) in their respective communities.

The contributions were presented by Dato’ Abdul Razak Sultan, representing the Chief Executive Officer of Jakel Textile Sdn. Bhd., in collaboration with Pertubuhan Jaringan Al-Jannah and USM’s Islamic Centre as the host institution.

Through this initiative, each mosque received food aid for 13 asnaf, benefiting a total of 400 recipients from among the poor and needy in the Northeast district.

The donated items included rice, sardines, biscuits, and other essential kitchen supplies, aimed at easing the burden of living costs, particularly in preparation for Ramadan.

Director of USM’s Islamic Centre, Ustaz Zayd Zhari, expressed deep appreciation to Jakel Textile Sdn. Bhd. for their concern and generosity in channeling zakat wakalah through mosque networks.

“This contribution is truly meaningful in supporting the asnaf, especially as we approach the blessed month of Ramadan,” he said, adding that USM’s role as host reflects its commitment not only to academic excellence but also to community well-being.

Abdul Razak emphasised that the zakat wakalah initiative is part of Jakel’s ongoing efforts to ensure zakat obligations benefit those most in need.

“As a company rooted in society, Jakel is committed to fulfilling its zakat responsibilities and channeling them through trusted institutions such as mosques.

“We hope this contribution helps ease the burden of the asnaf as they prepare for Ramadan,” he said, while acknowledging the strong cooperation from USM and Pertubuhan Jaringan Al-Jannah in ensuring orderly distribution.

The programme was also attended by the Chairman of Pertubuhan Jaringan Al-Jannah for Northeast Penang mosques, Tuan Syed Abdul Kadir Syeh Abdullah Idid; representatives of Jakel Textile Sdn. Bhd.; leaders of Pertubuhan Jaringan Al-Jannah; and mosque representatives from across the district.
