FROM KITCHEN TO IFTAR TABLE: 172 USM VOLUNTEERS ENSURE 1,500 CONGREGANTS BREAK FAST COMFORTABLY EACH DAY
USM PENANG, 2 March 2026 – As early as 8.00 a.m., the kitchen of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Islamic Centre (Pusat Islam USM) is already bustling with preparations.
Smoke rises from giant cauldrons, the sound of vegetables being sliced fills the air, and rows of clean plates and glasses are neatly arranged – all for one purpose: to ensure that around 1,500 congregants can break their fast properly each day.
Behind this smooth operation stand 172 dedicated volunteers daily, comprising USM staff and local residents, who tirelessly work together to prepare iftar meals throughout Ramadan 1447H/2026M.
Some stir curries in huge pots, others cook rice and sauté dishes, while many faithfully prepare drinks and arrange meals under the tents.
Every task is carried out with responsibility, ensuring no congregant leaves with an empty stomach.
The atmosphere of harmony and joy is palpable as volunteers from diverse backgrounds unite.
Their sweat, shed despite fasting, does not dampen their spirit; instead, it symbolises solidarity and brotherhood strengthened in this blessed month.
Chairman of the USM Ramadan Activities Committee 1447H/2026M, Ustaz Iswandi Abdul Mokmin, said the extraordinary commitment of volunteers each Ramadan is the heartbeat of the iftar programme.
"Alhamdulillah, 172 volunteers come forward to help, regardless of fatigue. They arrive with sincere hearts, willing to give their time and energy to ensure 1,500 congregants can break fast comfortably," he said.
He added that preparing meals in such large quantities requires careful planning and strong cooperation.
"This is not just about cooking food. It is a platform to nurture sincerity, strengthen brotherhood, and teach the soul the meaning of sacrifice. Every dish served is the result of many hands working together," Iswandi explained.
The USM Islamic Centre’s annual iftar programme continues to receive overwhelming support from the campus community, including students, staff, and even outsiders.
Some volunteers have faithfully contributed their energy since the very first day of Ramadan.
When the Maghrib call to prayer is heard, the faces of those who have worked tirelessly since morning radiate gratitude and satisfaction.
From the kitchen to the iftar table, every small effort becomes a means of fostering bonds of friendship and multiplying blessings.
At USM Islamic Centre, Ramadan is not only about food, but about souls united, hands that give, and hearts drawn closer to the Divine.
