USM AND TNB RESEARCH INK MoU TO ENHANCE STRATEGIC COLLABORATION ON ENERGY RESEARCH
USM PENANG, 4 February 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and TNB Research Sdn. Bhd. (TNBR) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a ceremony here, thereby formalising a strategic collaborative research agreement between the two institutions.

This collaboration reflects the confidence that the industry has in the capability of USM as a strategic partner in dealing with the challenges of transforming the energy sector, specifically in the development of energy management solutions which are flexible and resilient.

This initiative is in line with the need for a reliable power system as well as an increase in the penetration of renewable energy, which aligns with the national energy transition agenda of the country.

Through the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus, USM is committed in contributing its academic expertise and applied research to produce solutions based on science that is practical, relevant, and having a high impact on the industry.
This MoU prepares the collaborative framework that is structured to encompass education and mutual growth, technology creation, knowledge-sharing as well as long-term capacity development in the context of power and energy systems, based on professional governance and protection of intellectual property.

Among the main focus of this collaboration is the implementation of the “Energy Management System for Resilient Generation Reliability” project, which focuses on the development of a plan on energy generation and distribution as well as a decision-making support platform that is based on data.

This project combines USM’s expertise in modelling and optimising power systems with TNB Research’s real-world operational needs, ensuring that the outcomes will effectively support national energy planning in a sustainable and resilient manner.
