USM RECEIVES OVER RM456,000 ZAKAT WAKALAH CONTRIBUTION FROM MAYBANK ISLAMIC, EASING BURDEN OF 571 B40 STUDENTS

USM PENANG, 16 February 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has received a zakat wakalah contribution totaling RM456,206.13 from Maybank Islamic Berhad to ease the financial burden of 571 students under the Siswa Sulung Program.
These first-generation students from B40 families will benefit from assistance covering accommodation and essential study equipment.

The handover ceremony was graced by USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, and Maybank Islamic Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muhd Ramadhan Fitri Ellias, alongside senior management representatives from both institutions.

Abdul Rahman expressed deep appreciation for Maybank Islamic’s continued commitment to student welfare, particularly for asnaf, B40, and students with special needs.
He highlighted that nearly 70 percent of USM’s student population comes from B40 backgrounds, many of whom rely on the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans not only for education but also to support their families.
“This contribution is more than financial aid; it is a beacon of hope that ensures our B40 students can pursue their studies in a conducive environment without being weighed down by rising living costs,” he said.

Muhd Ramadhan emphasised Maybank Islamic’s belief that education is the best investment for the future, as it empowers individuals and builds competitive human capital regardless of background.

“We hope this contribution helps bridge the education gap and inspires students to strive for success,” he noted, reaffirming Maybank Islamic’s commitment to strengthening student welfare and supporting higher education transformation for long-term sustainability.
The collaboration between USM and Maybank Islamic reflects a shared vision of inclusive and sustainable access to higher education. Both institutions look forward to continuing this strategic partnership to enhance student welfare and empower future generations.

Also present at the ceremony were USM Bursar, Dr. Rafizal Abd Rahim; Northern Region Director of Maybank Islamic Berhad, Shukor Mohd.
