USM PENANG, 3 February 2026 – The Centre for Global Archaeological Research (PPAG) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), celebrates its 30th anniversary today, marking three decades of continuous contributions in research, capacity building, and international collaboration in the fields of archaeology and cultural heritage.

Over this period, PPAG has played a vital role in strengthening Malaysia’s archaeological knowledge base through multidisciplinary research approaches, ethical and sustainable heritage management, and cross-institutional cooperation.

PPAG has also grown into one of the leading archaeological research institutions in the region, aligning with national development priorities while contributing to global scholarly discourse.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, stated that this three-decade milestone reflects PPAG’s maturity as a research centre built on academic discipline, research integrity, and the university’s continuous support.

He emphasized that PPAG not only conducts field excavations but also leads integrated scientific approaches encompassing laboratory analysis, material studies, systematic documentation, and applied sciences to ensure that every finding is supported by authentic data.

“Among the latest research achievements are new discoveries at the Bukit Choras Archaeological Site, excavations at the Sungai Batu Archaeological Complex in collaboration with the Department of National Heritage, ongoing research at Guar Kepah, and the implementation of Heritage Impact Studies in the Lenggong Valley, which highlight a balanced approach between research, conservation, and development,” he said.

He added that these successes are supported by the development of advanced laboratory infrastructure and facilities, planned in stages as a long-term investment by the university to strengthen scientific analytical capabilities according to international standards.

“These facilities enable detailed analysis of artifacts, building materials, and sediments, while supporting internal university research and providing expertise to government agencies, the private sector, and higher education institutions,” he continued.
