On the first night, the students conducted a brief exploratory walk around the surrounding area.

This experience provided an opportunity for the students to observe the local environment and gain initial insights into everyday life in Japan.

Through this observation, the students were able to compare Japanese residential settings with those at home, particularly in aspects of cleanliness, urban planning, and community atmosphere.

In addition, the students then began learning how to navigate the Japanese public transportation system, including understanding train routes, ticketing methods, and station etiquette. This experience was essential in developing practical independence and cultural adaptability.

The following day, 11 January, the programme continued with a visit to Dōtonbori, one of Osaka’s most well-known cultural and commercial districts.

The journey to Dōtonbori required the students to utilise their newly-acquired knowledge on train travel, and reinforcing experiential learning.

The visit was conducted with an academic focus, encouraging the students to observe the area’s historical background and its role in shaping Osaka’s identity.

Originally developed as an entertainment district during the Edo period, Dōtonbori has evolved into a major centre of food culture and tourism.

In addition to activities in Osaka, the programme also included academic visits to Nanzan University in Nagoya and Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High School in Kyoto.

Overall, the academic trip provided valuable experiential learning opportunities by combining cultural immersion, historical understanding, and practical life skills, thereby enriching the students’ academic and personal development.
