USM HOSTS INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENT AT USM@KL TO EXPLORE STRATEGIC HIGHER EDUCATION COLLABORATIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 January 2026 — Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) highlighted Malaysia’s role as a leading global education hub through a high-level engagement session with foreign embassies and high commissions, held at USM@KL in Kuala Lumpur.

The event, coordinated by USM’s Academic and International Division, brought together diplomatic representatives from more than a dozen countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa on 8 January 2026, reflecting growing international confidence in Malaysia’s higher education system and USM’s position as a strategic partner in fostering global academic collaboration.

Education as a Pillar of National and Global Progress

During the session, USM leaders emphasised the pivotal role of higher education in shaping national development, social mobility, and global progress.

The discussion highlighted Malaysia’s strategy guided by the National Higher Education Direction and aligned with Malaysia MADANI prioritising quality, inclusivity, sustainability, and the preparation of graduates for the evolving global workforce.

The engagement also referenced Malaysia’s forthcoming Higher Education Plan (PPTM 2026–2035), designed to anticipate global trends such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence integration, sustainability imperatives, and cross-border workforce demands.

The roadmap focuses on technological advancement, ethical and human-value education, flexible learning pathways, and international collaboration to develop future-ready graduates.

A Platform for Strategic Academic Collaboration

The session provided a forum to explore tangible opportunities for academic collaboration, including:

  • Promotion of USM academic programmes in partner countries;
  • Recruitment of international students and development of postgraduate pathways;
  • Joint research and innovation initiatives; and
  • Academic mobility and transnational education models.

The engagement highlighted USM’s commitment to fostering meaningful cross-border partnerships and advancing Malaysian higher education on the global stage.

Diplomatic representatives from Jordan, Iraq, Sudan, Uzbekistan, Nigeria, China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Ghana and other nations attended, reflecting widespread international interest in USM’s academic programmes and research initiatives.

USM@KL: A Strategic Hub for International Engagement

The Kuala Lumpur campus, USM@KL, served as a strategic platform for the session, showcasing its growing role in postgraduate education, international partnerships, policy dialogue, and academic collaboration in the Klang Valley.

By hosting diplomatic representatives in the heart of Malaysia’s capital, USM reinforced its capacity to serve as a bridge between Malaysia and global academic communities.

Showcasing Malaysian Excellence

USM shared its expertise in engineering, health and life sciences, physical and pure sciences, social sciences, business, management, creative arts, and sustainability research.

The university’s world-class facilities, interdisciplinary research initiatives, and commitment to innovation underpin its internationalisation efforts.

The university’s global standing was highlighted, with USM ranked 134th in the QS World University Rankings 2026, placing it among the world’s top universities and reflecting consistent international performance.

In addition to its overall ranking, USM has also achieved top positions in several Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) categories in global impact assessments, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development, research impact, and societal contribution.

Diplomatic Synergy and Shared Commitment

The session concluded with mutual appreciation between USM and the participating diplomatic missions, highlighting support for continued collaboration in talent development, knowledge exchange, and Malaysia’s role as a trusted destination for quality higher education.

Acting Chairman of USM’s Board of Governors, Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said, thanked the dignitaries for their presence and engagement, saying, “This session demonstrates the transformative power of academic partnerships, unlocking opportunities, enriching student experiences, and advancing shared knowledge for the benefit of all.”

While the Vice-Chancellor of USM, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, added, “Bringing together a diverse group of diplomatic representatives at USM@KL allowed direct interaction with our academic leaders, experience of our international vision, and real-time feedback. The dialogue today shows that Malaysia’s higher education landscape is dynamic and globally relevant.”

The engagement with the embassies highlighted the potential of closer academic connections to create opportunities, enrich student experiences, and contribute to shared knowledge, leaving a positive outlook for future collaborations.
