KUBANG KERIAN, 13 January 2013 - USM was ready to help share its expertise with anyone who tries to help to overcome problems, not only in Gaza Palestine but also in other countries such as the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam. It was prepared to undertake a coordination effort, not to mention that there are much expertise in a variety of institutions that can be used together.

USM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman told the media after the presentation of certificate of completion of training to six Palestinian trainees in the manufacture of artificial limbs here this morning.

To a question whether USM is keen to work with international agencies to assist parties such as the Palestinians, the Vice-Chancellor explained that such efforts do not need to wait for others to do it, or with other agencies if we have the ability do so.

He added that the university is working to develop a culture of volunteerism and is ready to provide the appropriate means to do so. Rather than always expecting others to in the effort that can be carried out without assistance; for example, to establish the Palestinian Education Fund through contributions of its community through voluntary efforts that include encouraging contribution from salary deductions of about RM20.00 per month, or RM1.00 a day of work, that is capable of generating revenue to finance Palestinian students either in their home country or those who are here.

“If other institutions are also taking similar steps, imagine how much the effort can generate if were to be done together for the benefit of those who need it,” said Omar.

Obviously, USM also intends to strengthen its efforts to train Palestinian children who are able instill the same values and willing to volunteer, and most importantly build their knowledge capability, not just mere physical strength in the face of the enemy but as well as running programmes to motivate Palestinian children to develop their talents and abilities on a long-term basis.

“We also expect to take the initiative to develop simple technologies such as producing clean water and those that can improve the quality of life, not only in Palestine but also in other countries.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor also presented artificial limbs, products of learning outcomes of Palestinian students, to three Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital patients.

Omar Osman also presented contributions 3-in-1 non-metal wheel chair that functions as a wheel chair, stretcher and bed to the Amal Malaysia President, Haji Hussin Ismail.

The 3-in-1 wheel chair was designed by USM School of Mechanical Engineering lecturer, Dr. Yazid Amir Ali, through an allocation of RM3,000 from the Division of Industry and Community Network.

The Vice-Chancellor also received RM5,000 from the Campus Community Health Cooperative for Palestine Education Fund.

Also present were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) Professor Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal; Campus Health Director Professor Dato’ Mohamed Mafauzy and key officers and USM Palestine Charity Foundation officers. - Text: MOHAMAD ABDULLAH
