USM RESEARCHER CLINCHES PLATINUM AWARD AND GOLD MEDAL AT IBIEC 2025, MUKAH, SARAWAK
SARAWAK, 6 August 2025 - In a stunning demonstration of innovation and sustainability, a lecturer from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Housing, Building, and Planning (HBP), Assoc. Prof. Sr Ts. Dr. Md Azree Othuman Mydin, achieved success at the recent International Borneo Innovation, Exhibition, and Competition (IBIEC) 2025 that was held in Sarawak.
The research and innovative solutions to environmental challenges presented led to him being honoured with two prestigious awards, showcasing his outstanding contribution to the construction and materials sector.
Md Azree's award-winning invention, “Industrial Waste By-products as a Game-Changer in Sustainable Lightweight Foamed Concrete Blocks”, represents a groundbreaking approach to turning industrial waste into eco-friendly building materials.
His invention not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers a sustainable alternative to traditional construction materials.
This innovation was awarded the Platinum Award as the Overall Winner in the Construction & Material/Built Environment category and the Gold Medal for Excellence in Innovation, a recognition of his significant contribution to sustainable construction practices.
As part of the awards, Md Azree was presented with RM800, a trophy, and a Certificate of Excellence, adding to the growing list of accolades for his pioneering work.
His recognition at IBIEC 2025 is a testament to the ongoing efforts and commitment by HBP in pushing the boundaries of innovation and research in the field of sustainable development.
The event saw an overwhelming participation of over 280 innovators from local and international educational institutions, far surpassing its initial target of 200 entries.
This diverse gathering of minds underscored the growing importance of innovation in shaping a sustainable future, with participants showcasing remarkable inventions and research aimed at driving progress in technology and sustainability.
The event was graced by Mr. Royston Valentine, the Telian Assemblyman, who served as the guest of honour.
In his speech, Royston emphasized that IBIEC was “more than just an exhibition,” highlighting its role as a strategic platform for nurturing creativity and leadership in innovation, technology, and education.
He also noted that such events align with Sarawak's Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to create a skilled, future-ready workforce by 2030; an objective that resonates deeply with the focus of IBIEC in empowering the next generation of innovators.
Md Azree’s success at IBIEC 2025 not only brings recognition to his personal achievements but also serves as a testament to the commitment of HBP in advancing sustainable solutions for the built environment.
His innovative use of industrial waste to create sustainable building materials offers a glimpse of the future of construction; a future where eco-friendly practices play a central role in addressing environmental challenges.
This victory marks a significant step forward in the school’s mission to lead the charge in sustainable innovation, helping to shape a greener, more sustainable world for generations to come.
