USM PHYSICIST CLINCHES YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD AT MALAYSIA NUCLEAR MEDICINE 2025 CONFERENCE
KUALA LUMPUR, 25 July 2025 – Dr. Nurul Hashikin Ab. Aziz, a senior lecturer from the School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was awarded the MSNMMI Young Scientist Award at the Malaysia Nuclear Medicine (MyNM) 2025 Conference, recognising her pioneering work in improving medical dosimetry for Yttrium-90 (Y-90) radioembolization in liver cancer treatment.
The award was conferred in honour of Dr. Hashikin’s outstanding contributions to nuclear medicine research, particularly through the development and application of Monte Carlo algorithms to enhance the precision of radiation delivery in cancer therapy.
Her work has resulted in numerous high-impact publications, innovation awards, research grants, and intellectual property, further cementing her leadership in the field of medical physics.
She received the award—which included a certificate of appreciation and a RM500 cash prize during the Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the MyNM 2025 Conference at Pullman Hotel Kuala Lumpur City Centre, from 18 to 20 July 2025.
Organised by the Malaysian Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (MSNMMI), the conference gathered professionals across the nuclear medicine (NM) spectrum, including NM physicians, medical physicists, radiopharmacists, nurses, technologists, and radiographers—under the theme: “A Decade of Progress: Present Practices, Future Possibilities.”
Other recipients of MSNMMI awards included a research team led by Dr. Zaitul Husna from the National Cancer Institute, who received the Outstanding Research Award for their work on Gallium-68 Radiopharmaceuticals Production via Cyclotron, while Mr. Saiful Rizal and SN Muhammad Nash, also from the institute, were named winners of the Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Ali Khader Outstanding Awards for NM Technologist and Nurse respectively.
The School of Physics, USM, congratulated Dr. Hashikin on this achievement, expressing pride in her dedication and hoping that her success continues to inspire the advancement of medical physics for the benefit of society at large.
