CDR PUBLIC TALK SERIES: FROM THE LAB TO THE MARKET - A NUTRACEUTICALS DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY
USM PENANG, 9 April 2025 - The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Centre for Drug Research (CDR) recently held a public talk regarding the development process of nutraceuticals.
The global nutraceutical market is booming, with more and more consumers turning to supplements and functional foods for health benefits. Yet, behind this surge lies a critical challenge; while these products are widely accessible, robust scientific validation is crucial to confirm their health claims.
At the heart of this validation process is the scientific community, driving innovation and discovery. However, for many researchers, the path from laboratory breakthroughs to commercial success remains unclear. Academia often lack the support structures to help scientists navigate entrepreneurship and bring their innovations to consumers.
In this engaging public talk by speaker Dr. Alejandro Espinosa Sosa, he shared his journey of transforming rigorous biochemistry and molecular research into a successful nutraceutical brand. The lecture explored the challenges of commercialising science, the importance of evidence-based products, and the exciting opportunities for researchers to make a real-world impact in this rapidly growing industry.
Whether you're a scientist, entrepreneur, or simply curious about the future of health and wellness, the talk provided valuable insights into bridging the gap between research and the marketplace.
Dr. Alejandro Espinosa Sosa is the founder of Health Attractor, an initiative promoting the use of complex systems science in biomedical research, and Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Matter-Smart Nutrients, an evidence-based nutraceuticals brand with a successful track record in the Mexican market.
Being a physician, Dr. Sosa has a Medical Degree from the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, Cuba. He holds a certification in Functional Medicine from the Institute for Functional Medicine in the United States and a Master’s degree in Molecular Medicine from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany.
This Public Talk series, held in a hybrid format (in-person and online), is one way for CDR to continue its efforts in advancing scientific research and innovation in drug discovery, development, and healthcare solutions. This Public Talk Series is designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and innovation in the market. This platform offers a unique opportunity to engage with experts and expand the knowledge of entrepreneurship.
