REBEL 3.0: A SYMPHONY OF RESILIENCE AND UNITY AT USM
USM PENANG, 31 January 2025 – The USM Jazz Band captivated an audience of over 400 at the Rebel 3.0 concert, held on 22 January 2025 at Auditorium Dewan Budaya, showcasing a diverse repertoire of songs in pop and rock-infused performances.
What began in 2023 as a fundraising initiative at Kompleks Cahaya Siswa (KOMCA) has since evolved into a tradition that embodies innovation, inclusivity, and artistic growth.
This year's concert began with a thought-provoking presentation that addressed the band's current challenge: the loss of their long-time practice space.
A visual of an email announcing the evacuation notice transitioned seamlessly into the opening number, Whataya Want from Me.
"We were devastated by the loss of our long-time practice space, but this challenge only strengthened our resolve," said Azreen Harlina, the band’s tutor and creative director.
The concert featured an eclectic mix of contemporary hits like Good 4 U and Birds of a Feather, timeless classics such as My Heart Will Go On, and local favourites from Drama Band and Ella.
Staying true to the HEBAT agenda, the performances integrated unconventional instruments, including violins, trumpets, trombones, and saxophones, showcasing the band’s diverse approach to musical expression.
Beyond music, the event highlighted USM’s spirit of inclusivity, drawing performers from various academic disciplines, and proving that passion and perseverance transcend natural talent.
"I do not believe in the concept of innate talent," stated Azreen.
"I welcome anyone willing to learn, and if they show determination to master music, I will guide them.”
“Tonight’s performers are living proof of what hard work and dedication can achieve."
Rebel 3.0 was more than a concert—it was a powerful testament to unity, artistry, and resilience, demonstrating that music can inspire, empower, and bring a community together.
