HISTORIC HONOUR: USM EXPERT NAMED FIRST MALAYSIAN FELLOW OF THE OBESITY MEDICINE ASSOCIATION
USM PENANG, 27 January 2025 – The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) has conferred Dr. Teoh Soo Huat, a senior lecturer at the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (IPPT), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) as a Fellow, marking a historic milestone.
This prestigious designation is one of OMA's highest honours, recognising exceptional dedication to advancing obesity medicine globally.
Teoh is the first Malaysian and the only individual outside the United States (US) to achieve this recognition, highlighting his commitment to clinical excellence, advocacy, and education.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition,” said Teoh, reflecting on the significance of being named an OMA Fellow.
He added, “This recognition strengthens my resolve to provide innovative, evidence-based care to help patients overcome obesity and improve their overall health.”

Teoh is a SCOPE National Fellow of the World Obesity Federation, a Fellow of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine, a founding member of the SCOPE Leadership Program, and the 2022 recipient of the Peter G. Lindner Award from the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA).
His extensive training included fellowships in bariatric medicine at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and clinical bariatric studies at the China Medical University Hospital, Taiwan, alongside a preceptorship at Cleveland Clinic, USA.
Currently, Teoh serves as a medical lecturer in obesity and family medicine at USM IPPT, where he mentors postgraduate research, educates medical students, and speaks at global conferences, contributing significantly to the advancement of obesity medicine.
