FUTURE-READY GRADUATES: USM & PM COP COLLABORATION ENHANCES PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS
USM PENANG, 14 January 2025 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through the School of Physics, has strengthened its commitment to postgraduate development by collaborating with the Project Management Circle of Professionals (PM CoP) to organise a specialised training programme on Fundamentals of Project Management.
The initiative, tailored for M.Sc. (Solid State Physics) students, focused on science-driven project management methodologies to enhance both research and industry readiness.
Held over two days, the programme welcomed 12 postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, including Malaysia, China, Germany, and Nigeria.
Programme Coordinator, Associate Professor Dr. Quah Ching Kheng gave the welcoming speech, followed by the opening remarks from Deputy Dean of Academic, Career, and International, Associate Professor Dr. Iskandar Shahrim Mustafa.
The training integrated both theoretical frameworks and hands-on applications, enabling students to initiate, plan, execute, and manage projects aligned with scientific disciplines.
According to Iskandar, “This training plays a crucial role in preparing students for real-world challenges by equipping them with essential project management skills.
“It provides a structured approach to initiating, planning, executing, and managing projects—key competencies that are highly valued in both academic research and industry settings,” he said.
He continued, “Through hands-on exercises, case studies, and expert-led sessions, students gain practical insights that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry expectations, ultimately enhancing their career readiness.”
All sessions were conducted by Project Director at ams OSRAM, Lim Kheng Siang, alongside Senior Consultant at Deloitte Consulting SEA, Preeta Nambiar.
Both trainers, as part of a community-focused initiative, shared real-world expertise and case studies, providing students with industry-relevant insights.
Participants engaged in interactive workshops, case studies, and group projects, which culminated in group presentations and assessments on the final day.
The closing session was officiated by Deputy Dean of Research, Innovation and Industry-Community Engagement, Associate Professor Dr. Ahmad Fairuz Omar, who emphasised the importance of bridging academic knowledge with industry practices.
This collaboration further reinforces USM’s commitment to equipping postgraduate students with practical competencies that extend beyond academic research.
By integrating project management expertise with scientific disciplines, USM aims to enhance employability and leadership capabilities, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to contribute effectively to both academia and industry.
