USM PENANG, 30 September 2024 – The International Students Orientation Week (OW) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) kicked off today at Kompleks Cahaya Siswa (KOMCA), marking a vibrant start to the academic journey for 469 international mobility students (165) and full-time undergraduate students (304) from across the globe.

These students, hailing from countries such as China, France, Germany, Netherlands, Indonesia, Japan, Finland, Italy and South Korea among others, represent 10% of the university's intake of 4,742 students this year.

The students would be pursuing degrees in fields like management, engineering, computer science, and art & design.

Jointly organised by the Division of Student Development Affairs & Alumni (BHEPA), the International Mobility and Collaboration Centre (IMCC), and USM Buddies, this four-day programme offers students a comprehensive introduction to life in Malaysia.

It includes essential briefings on safety, visa and pass regulations, health services, and cultural insights to ease their transition into studying at USM.

The event was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and International, Professor Dato' Gs. Dr. Narimah Samat, alongside Professor Dr. Lee Keat Teong who is Exercising the Function of IMCC Director, and other university officials.

In her opening speech, Narimah congratulated the students on choosing USM as their academic destination and reminded them that true success encompasses not only academic excellence but also good health, love and support from family, and a good circle of friends.

She encouraged the students to immerse themselves in Malaysian culture and connect with the local community to fully appreciate the unique environment and social fabric of the country.

Lee further assured the students that IMCC is always ready to assist with any queries regarding visas, travel, and accommodation.

USM warmly welcomes all international students to its beautiful "Campus in a Garden" and hopes that they will enjoy an enriching academic and cultural experience in Malaysia, also referred to as ‘truly Asia’.

As part of the Ministry of Higher Education's 2021-2025 blueprint, which aims to increase the number of international students in Malaysia, USM is committed to achieving this milestone.

The university strives to become not only Asia's top educational destination but a global one as well.
