USM SHINES BRIGHT AT 23rd IMT-GT VARSITY CARNIVAL CLOSING CEREMONY
USM PENANG, 30 August 2024 – With a resounding success, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) marked the closing ceremony of the 23rd IMT-GT Varsity Carnival, uniting delegates from 12 universities across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand in a celebration of ASEAN unity and diversity through sports, culture, and academic seminars under the theme 'Embracing Differences of ASEAN Values for Sustainable Partnership.'
USM excelled in various categories, bagging medals in:
• Seminar, best paper (gold)
• Seminar, best overall paper
• Basketball (silver)
• Badminton (gold)
• Best cultural performance
Over six days, the event saw an impressive display of athleticism, intellectual discourse, and cultural performances, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation among the participants.
In his closing remarks, USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, expressed immense pride in the success of the event.
He commended the participants for their dedication and passion, which were evident in every competition and discussion.
"Your pursuit of excellence, passion, and hard work are the true essence of the IMT-GT Varsity Carnival," said Abdul Rahman, highlighting the importance of such events in promoting unity and cooperation among ASEAN nations.
"I hope that all participants had a wonderful experience and enjoyed their time at USM and in Penang," Abdul Rahman noted, adding that he will look forward to the next IMT-GT Varsity Carnival, which will be hosted by Thaksin University in 2025.
The closing ceremony was further graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and President of the IMT-GT Varsity Council.
He lauded the efforts of all participating universities and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to USM for their exceptional organization of the event.
"The success of this IMT-GT Varsity Carnival is the result of the unity and cooperation fostered through various sports, cultural, and seminar activities," he remarked, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the organizing committee led by USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Development Affairs and Alumni, Professor Dr. Shaharum Shamsuddin.
The night ended on a high note with USM inviting everyone to join in the upcoming 67th National Day celebrations, as cultural performances from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand further reinforced the unity and pride shared among the ASEAN community, leaving lasting memories of this remarkable event.
