USM PENANG, 2 March 2024 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has once again proved its innovation prowess at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE2024) that was held from 22 February until 24 February 2024 at the World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

USM has sent a total of 10 entries according to the contested categories and each one won a medal, which included 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze.

The following are the USM innovations that had captured the attention of judges and visitors:

Gold Medals

Title of Innovation: SALTZERO: Sodium-Free air-dried wheat noodles; Team Leader: Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Azhar Mat Easa (School of Industrial Technology)

Title of Innovation: StriataCare: A 3-in-1 topical cream for wound healing, antimicrobial protection and scar prevention; Team Leader: Assoc. Professor ChM. Dr. Mohd Nazri Ismail (Analytical Biochemistry Research Centre, ABrC)

Title of Innovation: Flex EPG: A Device for Speech Therapy Advancement and Precision Rehabilitation; Team Leader: Assoc Professor Ts. Dr. Fatanah Mohamad Suhaimi (Advanced Medical & Dental Institute, IPPT)

Title of Innovation: CytoQuick Gel Kit: An effective cellular processing kit for clinical diagnostic and research applications; Team Leader: Assoc Professor Dr. Badrul Hisham Yahaya (Advanced Medical & Dental Institute, IPPT)

Title of Innovation: ChewBee: A Novel Chewable Dietary Supplement from Stingless Bee Pot-Pollen and Potential for Obesity;  Team Leader: Assoc. Professor Dr. Mahaneem Mohamed (School of Medical Sciences)

Title of Innovation: COOLIT-GEL©️: A non-woody biomass cellulose hydrogel for anti-aging effect; Team Leader: Dr. Goh Choon Fu (School of Pharmaceutical Sciences)

Silver Medals

Title of Innovation: Biocoating Fertilizer: 3 in 1 Fertilizer; Team Leader: Assoc. Professor Dr. Husnul Azan Tajarudin (School of Industrial Technology)

Title of Innovation: BioNutri-MM: Virtual Lab to Enhance Students' Achievement in STEM-Biology Education; Team Leader: Dr. Nor Asniza Ishak (School of Educational Studies)

Title of Innovation: OwlSight: An Outsourced Security Operations Centre; Team Leader: Ts. Dr. Shankar Karuppayah (National Advanced IPv6 Centre, NAv6)

Bronze Medal

Title of Innovation: V-LeARn Ortho: An Intelligent Haptic Augmented Reality for Orthodontic Education System; Team Leader: Assoc. Professor Dr. Norehan Mokhtar (Advanced Medical & Dental Institute, IPPT)

According to the Director of USM Centre for Innovation and Consultation (CiC), Professor Ir. Dr. Srimala Sreekantan, the recognition showcased the dedication and creativity of our researchers and reinforced our commitment and passion to advancing society through innovation.

“USM’s success at MTE2024 not only highlighted the institution’s leadership in technological innovation but also reaffirmed Malaysia’s global position and recognition in innovation,” she said. 

The 23rd edition of MTE was a 3-day hybrid innovation and technology event that brought together companies, entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators to showcase and explore the latest technology trends and solutions.

It has successfully highlighted 368 innovations from various public service organisations, innovation and technology-based companies, higher education institutions, researchers and students at the school level.

Meanwhile, it has been joined by 12 countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, China, Iran, Hong Kong, Poland, Singapore, Yemen and Thailand as well as Taiwan.
